I’ll be honest: I hate the word burnout. Maybe it’s because I’m stubborn. Maybe it’s because the word has been overused to the point of losing its edge. Or maybe it’s because most pastors I know didn’t quit—they just kept going until something inside them went quiet.
Call it burnout. Call it exhaustion. Call it quiet quitting. The language almost doesn’t matter anymore. What matters is that a growing number of pastors are still preaching, still leading, still showing up—while something vital is slowly being drained beneath the surface.
This isn’t about laziness or lack of faith. It’s about the accumulation of weight. Constant decision-making. Emotional labor that never clocks out. Cultural pressure, shrinking margins, and the unspoken expectation that spiritual leaders should somehow be immune to human limits. Over time, passion gives way to duty. Prayer becomes functional. Joy becomes rare. And the danger isn’t collapse—it’s numbness.
Scripture doesn’t glorify that kind of leadership. Even Jesus withdrew to lonely places to pray (Luke 5:16). He slept when the storm raged (Mark 4:38). He chose intimacy with the Father over constant availability to the crowds. Rhythm wasn’t a weakness—it was the source of His power.
For leaders, the answer isn’t just rest—it’s refilling. Ephesians 5:18 doesn’t say be filled once, but be continually filled with the Spirit. One of the most overlooked spiritual practices in pastoral life is intentional waiting on the Holy Spirit—unhurried worship, praying in the Spirit (Jude 1:20), and allowing God’s presence to recharge what responsibility has drained.
You already know this. I’m just here to remind you that it’s ok to hit pause and get into His presence. It’s ok to take a day or two away to seek His face. Don’t just retreat to prepare vision or a message… take the time now to find refreshing for your soul.
You don’t need to leave ministry.
You need a fresh infilling.
Whatever you call it—it’s real. And God still meets tired leaders with renewing power when they slow down long enough to receive it.
