The Leaders You Need
Already Exist

Your church may not need more volunteers. It may need a better way to recognize and develop leaders.
The Leadership Thought
Most churches don’t have a volunteer problem.

They have a leadership development problem.

The people you’re praying God would send may already be sitting in your services, attending your groups and serving on your teams.

They just haven’t been noticed, trusted or developed yet.

Healthy churches don’t wait for fully formed leaders to arrive. They recognize potential, create opportunities and help ordinary people grow into meaningful responsibility.

The leaders you need are often hidden inside the volunteers you already have.
Three Leadership Shifts
Stop waiting. Start developing.
01
Stop recruiting. Start noticing.

Recruiting usually begins with a vacancy.

Leadership development begins with a person.

Pay attention to the volunteer who takes initiative, solves problems, gathers people and cares about the outcome without being asked.

02
Give responsibility earlier

Many churches wait until someone is fully ready before giving them responsibility.

But people rarely become ready in theory.

Give them a real assignment, clear boundaries, regular feedback and room to learn. Responsibility should increase as trust and capacity grow.

03
Every leader needs a name

Ask every leader in your church one simple question:

Who are you intentionally developing?

If nobody has a name, your ministry may be organized, but it is not multiplying.

Leadership Reflection
Who is one person you could develop this fall?
Don’t choose the most polished person. Choose someone who is faithful, responsive and willing to grow.
Write down a name. Pray for them. Invite them into a conversation this week.
Your Move This Week
Have one leadership development conversation.

Meet with one emerging leader and ask:

→ What part of ministry gives you energy?
→ Where would you like to grow?
→ What responsibility are you ready to carry?
→ What support would help you succeed?
→ What could your next step be this September?

Brett’s Note
Leadership development is slower than recruitment, but it lasts longer.

Recruiting can solve this week’s scheduling problem.

Development solves next year’s leadership problem.

You may not have the team you want yet, but you probably have more potential than you realize.

Notice people. Trust them. Coach them. Give them room to grow.
